Let’s Write a Short Story! By Joe Bunting Review

I recently volunteered to read and review a book by Joe Bunting on writing a short story. Below is the review I posted on amazon.

Approachable, clear, concise, practical and motivational. These are the words I would use to describe Joe’s book. Well worth the $3.99.

I thought this would be a niche book, excessively specific for short stories. However, while it contains excellent advice for writing, editing, and publishing short stories, much of the advice is directly applicable to general writing. I have already implemented many of his suggestions into my novel. A few in particular I found quite effective including those within his section “A Secret Trick to Showing Rather than Telling”. His examples will guide you through showing and interrogating to improve your story.

I would recommend this book to all writers. It is a quick read and walks the line between advice and motivation wonderfully.

Resources for self-publishing

David Carnoy has been an invaluable resource for self-publishers. He is a CNET writer and has put out a few nearly comprehensive articles on self-publishing (Print books and ebooks).

Self-publishing a book: 25 things you need to know

How to self-publish an ebook

I personally chose to do all of the formatting and layout design by myself rather than pay services like Lulu.com to do it for me (I am cheap that way). I also chose to publish with Amazon only. By doing so I enrolled in KDP Select. Now I earn revenue through amazon prime members who share my book. I actually make more from shares than purchases. Overall, exposure has increased as well. The KDP forums contain thousands of posts about optimizing your work as well.

52 Great Blogs for Self Publishers
Another fantastic resource, although there are so many it can be daunting. I hope my blog makes this list sometime!

Of the “Great Blogs”, my favorite is Publetariat. Their ‘Think’ page has excellent comentary on the state of the publishing world.

Anyway, if you are interested in self-publishing I hope these help.
Please let me know if there are better sites out there.
